Some days ago I was telling you that OUTSIDE THE BOX made it into Steffi's and Matz's German podcast Schuss vorm BUCH - and that it was such a great thing to be part of their project.
Following this interview, I invited Steffi to answer some questions for us in return, and it's with a great pleasure that you'll find her own words below, both in German and in English!

What is the best in doing a podcast, and what do you want to achieve with Schuss vorm BUCH?
Es macht einfach Spaß!
Wir überlegen uns ein Thema über das wir sprechen möchten, lesen Bücher oder schauen Filme dazu und haben ungewöhnliche Gespräche – das ist sehr bereichernd! In unserem Spezial weltweit, an dem ihr ja auch teilgenommen habt – haben wir Freunde, Familie und Bekannte weltweit nach ihren Buchtipps gefragt und wie es ihnen Vorort so geht.
Es ist eine tolle Art mit Social Distancing um zu gehen. Man gibt sich nicht der Schockstarre hin oder ist deprimiert, sondern tritt in Kontakt mit anderen, und kann auch von ihrem Umgang mit der Krise lernen! Beeindruckend fand ich Atilla, ein Gastronom in Istanbul mit 60 Angestellten, der Geld sammelt um fürs Krankenhaus zu kochen – er wird das nicht lange durchhalten können und meinte vielleicht studiere ich ja nochmal?!
Oder eine Freundin in Nicaragua, die bei der ersten politischen Krise gehamstert hat, und jetzt bei der zweiten Krise meint, man ist ruhiger und weiß es wird keiner verhungern. Das hat mich ziemlich beeindruckt und die Gespräche waren einfach etwas ganz Besonderes in unserem Corona Alltag/Homeoffice.
Mehr als ein Projekt, das ist wie sich mit Freunden auf einen Drink zu einer Videokonferenz verabreden – eine neue Erfahrung, aber total schön!
It's just fun!
We think about a topic we want to talk about, read books or watch movies about it and have unusual conversations - it's very enriching! In our Special Worldwide, in which you also took part - we asked friends, family and acquaintances worldwide for their book tips and how they are doing on the spot.
It's a great way to go with social distancing. You don't give in to shock or be depressed, but get in touch with others and can learn from their handling of the crisis! I was impressed by Atilla, a caterer in Istanbul with 60 employees, who collects money to cook for the hospital - he won't be able to keep this up for long and said "maybe I'll study again?"
Or a friend in Nicaragua, who hoarded during the first political crisis, and now during the second crisis thinks that all are calmer and know that nobody will starve. That impressed me quite a bit and the conversations were just something very special in our Corona everyday/home office.
More than just a project, it's like meeting friends for a drink in a video conference - a new experience, but totally nice!
What does sustainability mean for you, on a daily basis?
Plastikvermeidung wo es nur geht. Wir haben total umgestellt auf Säcke fürs Obst, und immer eigene Taschen dabei. Seifenstücke, statt in Plastik verpackte Flüssigseife, Frosch Putzmittel und wir benutzen einen Wassersprudler. Essen so einkaufen, dass nichts weggeworfen wird, und größtenteils regional. Bei Kleidung versuchen wir möglichst oft green einzukaufen, das ist noch ausbaubar.
Plastic avoidance wherever possible. We have totally switched to bags for fruit, and always carry our own bags. Soap bars, instead of plastic wrapped liquid soap, Frog (an eco-friendly brand) cleaning agent and we use a water soda machine. Buying food so that nothing is thrown away, and mostly regional. With clothes we try to buy green as often as possible, this is still expandable.
Do you believe there will be a before/after coronavirus, and what do you think it will change?
Je länger Corona anhält, um so gravierender wird die Veränderung. Wenn sich Menschen erst mal an Homeoffice und Videokonferenzen gewöhnt haben, dann wird in Zukunft hoffentlich weniger geflogen, und auch Homeoffice für viele möglich, die sich das wünschen.
Urlaub im eigenen Land könnte interessanter werden – für den Schwarzwald wünsche ich mir einen push, da seit den 70-ern nichts mehr passiert ist. Kann aber leider auch sein, dass die Menschen wir bescheuert verreisen, sobald das wieder möglich ist.
The longer corona lasts, the more serious the change becomes. Once people get used to home office and video conferencing, hopefully less flying will be done in the future, and home office will be possible for many who wish to do so.
Holidays in your own country could be more interesting - for the Black Forest I wish for a push, since nothing has happened since the 70s. But unfortunately it could also be that people will travel like crazy as soon as this is possible again.
I have been experimenting with radish on my balcony - what has your confinement-sustainability experiment been?
Das wechselt immer wieder. Momentan versuchen wir Fleisch und Eier nur noch lokal zu kaufen, Obst, Gemüse wenn möglich regional – Äpfel aus Neuseeland sind verboten! Ich mache mein Granola Müsli selber, Matz backt Brot und wir gehen nur noch einmal die Woche einkaufen. Wir überlegen davor ganz genau was, damit alles verbraucht und nichts weggeworfen wird. Auch beim Weintrinken sind wir auf Pfälzer Weine umgestiegen – definitiv unterschätzt! Flüge innerhalb Europas haben wir durch Zugreisen ersetzt.
It keeps changing. At the moment we try to buy meat and eggs only locally, fruits, vegetables if possible regional - apples from New Zealand are forbidden! I make my own granola muesli, Matz bakes bread and we only go shopping once a week. We think about what to do before we go shopping so that everything is used up and nothing is thrown away. We also switched to Palatinate wines when drinking wine - definitely underestimated! We have replaced flights within Europe with train travel.
With AudiotexTour you have been sharing the history of important sites in your hometown: why is it so important? What can people learn? What have you learned as well from doing it?
Wenn man in Urlaub fährt, dann schaut man sich Museen, Kirchen und historisch wichtige Orte an, aber zuhause ist alles normal und man kümmert sich selten um die „Schätze“ die es in der Umgebung zu entdecken gibt.
Unsere Audioguides sind für Touristen und Einheimische gleichermaßen und bringen den Menschen Geschichten, Ereignisse, Personen und ihren eigenen Ort näher. Bei uns lernt der Zuhörer ohne es zu merken, wir bereiten interhaltsamen Content, der für Erwachsene, Kinder, Experten und Laien funktioniert, indem wir sie in die entsprechende Stimmung versetzten. Wir haben sehr viel über die Orte gelernt, und sind sehr dankbar für die bereichernde Zusammenarbeit mit besonderen Menschen, wie z.B. den Schwestern im Kloster Heiligenbronn, einem blinden Bewohner, der uns seine Welt erklärt oder auch der Mittelalter Band Lautenfuchs die die Burg Hohenschramberg mit ihrem dafür geschriebenen Lied zum Klingen bringen. Arbeit kann ein Herzensprojekt sein und total Spaß machen!
When you go on holiday, you visit museums, churches and historically important places, but at home everything is normal and you seldom take care of the "treasures" to be discovered in the surrounding area.
Our audio guides are for tourists and locals alike and bring people closer to stories, events, people and their own place. With us, the listener learns without noticing, we prepare entertaining content that works for adults, children, experts and laymen alike by putting them in the right mood. We have learned a lot about the places, and are very grateful for the enriching collaboration with special people, such as the sisters in Heiligenbronn Monastery, a blind resident who explains his world to us, or the medieval band Lautenfuchs who make Hohenschramberg Castle sound with their song written for it. Work can be a project of the heart and totally fun!
